Sculpture 'two words' project Statement

For this sculpture, i chose to explore the words 'extensive' and 'loose.'

I find these to be the most intriguing as they both create the sense of letting go or reaching out.

The concept of my sculpture is to show how people in society or individuals reach out or try to escape from a reality or try to break through the dullness of everyday life but is always held back and blocked by the 'real world.'

For my piece i chose to cast a human hand, which represents someone reaching out and the string represents the individuals thoughts and feelings which are then blocked by the wall which stops them from reaching their goal.

Drawing 'journey' project Statement

For my 'Journey' project, i wanted to create something personal to me, something which would be made up of snapshots of my own daily 'journey.'

I chose a continuous line drawing as i think that this best shows the collection of images as a timeline or consistent path.

This also shows the nature of how busy i am and how everything flows from one thing to another without stopping. I feel that this best represents me and my daily life.

Each part of my drawing Is a small part of the things i take notice of or my favourite parts of the day.

The drawing shows a small journey throughout one day from morning to evening, i think that everybody's daily journey is different and personal which makes each journey unique.

Print Statement

For the 'dispersion' and 'accumulation' project i decided to look at natural patterns and things which re created naturally that make interesting marks. While looking for something to base my work on, i noticed how interesting the grains of wood were at the table i was sitting on. I sketched the shape of the lines and thought about what else i could look at to show these kinda of lines and patterns.

I then looked at tree stumps and tree roots as i found that each different tree has its on maze of shapes and lines, which inspired me to do these separate pieces.

I think that its interesting to show the things that we don't really appreciate or think about a lot because we see it so often but these lines and marks appear after years and years of growth just like in a person where scars and wrinkles appear in the skin.

I chose to use black and white as i think that this makes the negative space make the lines more prominent as this was my main focus in the pieces.

Justine Ashbee Response

After looking at Justine Ashbee's work, i decided to create something a little similar to try out some of the line work and i'm pretty pleased with the result.

I think that each part of the drawing look like a piece of hair, twisted and intertwined. 

I think that using this method on a larger scale could be quite interesting and even with less detail, the patterns and media could be changed. 

For my Print work i would like to take my work into a larger scale and try using charcoal or paint to make some interesting marks.

Drawing 'Journey' Project progress

For my journey project, i have been looking at continuous line drawings and different styles of drawing this way.

I'd like to add colour to these drawings otherwise, a larger piece could appear to be bland and monotonous. I want to do this by adding watercolour or ink to the drawing in blocks of colour to make focus points in each section.

'Journey' Project

While thinking about how i wanted to draw up the images from my 'journey,' i considered doing a series of drawings that would link together to show a timeline of my day.

I considered the fact that it might be a little unclear that this was a timeline and it might just appear as a group of random objects.

I then thought that the best way to show that all the images happened chronologically, the best technique would be to use continuous line as this would make the piece one larger drawing.

The style is very simple and loose but i think that it would be the best way to show a 'journey' that  from start to finish. 

I would like this to be quite a long drawing that stretches out a few metres to create a 'timeline.'

Contemporary Print 'Dispersion' Project

For the 'dispersion' and 'accumulation' project, we initially took a walk around to take note of all the small things that could possibly be collected together to make a piece. After looking around at the leaves on the trees, the texture of the ground and the materials around us, on the floor or found objects, i took an interest in the patterns naturally made in wood and bark. 

I took a few sketches of the lines and marks so that i could transfer these into prints later.

Drawing 'Journey' Project

For the 'Journey' project, i instantly thought about making my project about an entire day and the things i see/do.

As leicester is my hometown and i grew up near the city, i know my way around and everything is familiar to me. 

I thought it would be interesting to document everything i did in a day, from waking up at home, having my morning coffee, travelling to uni, going to work, my favourite places and pick out the most important/interesting images. 

To start this project, i would need to take photographs or sketches of everything i did from morning to night. 

Personally, i like to record all the things that make me happy like meeting with friends and eating good food. I think that this project will be very personal to me as i think that the path that each person takes in a day is very different and you can tell a lot about a person by the little things that they do.

I also think that each piece of my work can tell the story, even if it doesn't really fit together, its really just made up of little snapshots of the little things that i notice or do that is personal to me.

Sculpture 'two words' project

The aim of this project is to select two words from a variety of choices and create a sculpture based from your choice of words. I find the concept of this very intriguing and inspirational as you could potentially create anything of different textures and sizes. A few words that stood out to me were 'loose' 'hollow' 'extensive' 'close' and 'intimate.' I considered the outcomes to be something that would spread out or start from a point that could be extended. I considered what materials I could use for the types of words I was looking at and thought that maybe the best media would be plaster or string or wire as this can be manipulated and twisted. For starting points and for a way to test out my ideas, I'd like to use plasticine to play around with extensive positions and to see how I can manipulate the shape into something that bends and twists to test how this would work with other materials.

Out of all the words we were given, i was most drawn to 'intimate' and 'extensive.' The words create an image in my head of something that was close together but also continuos or growing.

I want to create something which represents intimacy but also continuous or growing.
