Sculpture 'two words' project Statement

For this sculpture, i chose to explore the words 'extensive' and 'loose.'
I find these to be the most intriguing as they both create the sense of letting go or reaching out.
The concept of my sculpture is to show how people in society or individuals reach out or try to escape from a reality or try to break through the dullness of everyday life but is always held back and blocked by the 'real world.'
For my piece i chose to cast a human hand, which represents someone reaching out and the string represents the individuals thoughts and feelings which are then blocked by the wall which stops them from reaching their goal.

Drawing 'journey' project Statement

For my 'Journey' project, i wanted to create something personal to me, something which would be made up of snapshots of my own daily 'journey.'
I chose a continuous line drawing as i think that this best shows the collection of images as a timeline or consistent path.
This also shows the nature of how busy i am and how everything flows from one thing to another without stopping. I feel that this best represents me and my daily life.
Each part of my drawing Is a small part of the things i take notice of or my favourite parts of the day.
The drawing shows a small journey throughout one day from morning to evening, i think that everybody's daily journey is different and personal which makes each journey unique.

Print Statement

For the 'dispersion' and 'accumulation' project i decided to look at natural patterns and things which re created naturally that make interesting marks. While looking for something to base my work on, i noticed how interesting the grains of wood were at the table i was sitting on. I sketched the shape of the lines and thought about what else i could look at to show these kinda of lines and patterns.
I then looked at tree stumps and tree roots as i found that each different tree has its on maze of shapes and lines, which inspired me to do these separate pieces.
I think that its interesting to show the things that we don't really appreciate or think about a lot because we see it so often but these lines and marks appear after years and years of growth just like in a person where scars and wrinkles appear in the skin.
I chose to use black and white as i think that this makes the negative space make the lines more prominent as this was my main focus in the pieces.

Justine Ashbee Response

After looking at Justine Ashbee's work, i decided to create something a little similar to try out some of the line work and i'm pretty pleased with the result.
I think that each part of the drawing look like a piece of hair, twisted and intertwined.
I think that using this method on a larger scale could be quite interesting and even with less detail, the patterns and media could be changed.
For my Print work i would like to take my work into a larger scale and try using charcoal or paint to make some interesting marks.

Contemporary Print: My Work

Artist: Justine Ashbee

Justine Ashbee is an artist based in Seattle, WA and Brighton, UK.
All of her work is hand-drawn with paint pens. Her work consists of amorphous shapes which appear to resemble waves which seem to grow and morph into precise, delicate forms.
Her work is entirely improvisational
Artists comments on her work: "I’m utilizing stark, amorphous lines to trace the movement and human experience of the non-linear and imaginational realms. Through this intuitive visual language, a negotiation of the visceral and everyday human experiences of beauty and pleasure, and feeling are given voice."

I chose to look at Justine Ashbee's work as i found her style intriguing. I like the way that the abstract shapes show movement and look quite alive.
I'd like to use this style as part of my contemporary print project as i like the line work and i think that it could be used to show textures and small details.
I would think that this style would work quite well for close ups for the wood grain and patterns that i took pictures for.

Drawing 'Journey' Project progress

For my journey project, i have been looking at continuous line drawings and different styles of drawing this way.
I'd like to add colour to these drawings otherwise, a larger piece could appear to be bland and monotonous. I want to do this by adding watercolour or ink to the drawing in blocks of colour to make focus points in each section.

Artist: Paula Bonet

Paula Bonet is an illustration artist living in New York. She first started working by etching in oil paint until she realised that her technique took too long to complete.  She uses ink, pen and watercolour on wood or paper to create her work. She uses these materials as they are quick to use and fast drying materials which is necessary to meet the demands of her job.
She illustrates for things such as magazines and posters for clients as far as Hong Kong and Mexico.

The reason i chose to study Paula Bonet is because i admired her style, i like the sketchy lines and small blocks of colour.
Personally, i prefer to draw things which don't take a lot of time and with small amounts of detail.
I think that the use of little colour makes the work a lot more simple yet still effective, especially as poster or magazine illustrations.
I really like this style and i'd like to take parts of the methods and materials and try them out for my own work.

Artist:Naoko Ito

Pictures: http://artistaday.com/?p=5560

Naoko Ito is an installation and sculpture artist from Tokyo, Japan. She has a BA in science of design and graduated from Musashino Art University in Tokyo.
In her series titled 'Urban Nature,' she cut tree branches into small pieces and placed them into jars, assembling them into their original shape.

The pieces show the way that nature is trapped and destroyed by man-made objects and controlled and contained.
It also shows the fragility of nature and how easily it can be manipulated, especially by man.
I find the concept really interesting as it shows a lot of things about control and manipulation. As well as the more obvious meaning that nature is being trapped in the jars, this could also symbolise the way that people are trapped and controlled by society or by its own creations. The tree branch could represent an individual that wishes to grow as a person or find individuality and 'branch out' but is limited because of their surroundings.

'Journey' Project

While thinking about how i wanted to draw up the images from my 'journey,' i considered doing a series of drawings that would link together to show a timeline of my day.
I considered the fact that it might be a little unclear that this was a timeline and it might just appear as a group of random objects.
I then thought that the best way to show that all the images happened chronologically, the best technique would be to use continuous line as this would make the piece one larger drawing.
picture: from google

The style is very simple and loose but i think that it would be the best way to show a 'journey' that  from start to finish.
I would like this to be quite a long drawing that stretches out a few metres to create a 'timeline.'

Contemporary Print 'Dispersion' Project

For the 'dispersion' and 'accumulation' project, we initially took a walk around to take note of all the small things that could possibly be collected together to make a piece. After looking around at the leaves on the trees, the texture of the ground and the materials around us, on the floor or found objects, i took an interest in the patterns naturally made in wood and bark.
I took a few sketches of the lines and marks so that i could transfer these into prints later.

Artist: Brett Manning, Drawing Presentation

Brett Manning is a drawing artist from Chicago. She is a current artist making new work constantly.

Brett's work is figurative with geometric shapes, patterns and symbols.
Her work seems surreal but the subject of her works are more autobiographical and personal to the artist. She describes her work as 'glimpses into my head, untampered, abstaining from outside influences.'
i think that this is a very interesting statement as i think that most art is created to break the barriers of the mind which are created by society and the views of 'right' and 'wrong.' I think that this is reflects in her work as it appears that her work, no matter how strange and abstract, is a glimpse into what goes on inside her head or daydreams that are untainted by reality.
Her work is partly a visual diary which is based on her own emotions and things which are very sentimental. A lot of her backgrounds in her work are made up of thoughts or feelings, they create a dream-like feeling, especially her use of colour and objects.
Before working on her main pieces, she makes sketches and notes which she then accumulates into larger pieces. For my own work, i think this is relevant because i think that making small sketches and doodles can help influence larger pieces by gathering smaller idea's and developing small things into one greater idea.
Her works which include items such as knitted jumpers or blankets show warmth and comfort. These works reflect her own insecurities and hiding herself away.

One of the main reasons i chose to include Brett Manning in my research is because i have been a fan of her earlier works for a while. In particular, i like the style which she draws hair and fabrics.
Then i started to look into her more recent work which is more abstract and surreal. As you look around at all the small things that make up the drawing it creates a mood and almost tells a story.

Drawing 'Journey' Project

For the 'Journey' project, i instantly thought about making my project about an entire day and the things i see/do.
As leicester is my hometown and i grew up near the city, i know my way around and everything is familiar to me.
I thought it would be interesting to document everything i did in a day, from waking up at home, having my morning coffee, travelling to uni, going to work, my favourite places and pick out the most important/interesting images.
To start this project, i would need to take photographs or sketches of everything i did from morning to night.
Personally, i like to record all the things that make me happy like meeting with friends and eating good food. I think that this project will be very personal to me as i think that the path that each person takes in a day is very different and you can tell a lot about a person by the little things that they do.
I also think that each piece of my work can tell the story, even if it doesn't really fit together, its really just made up of little snapshots of the little things that i notice or do that is personal to me.
